A rack consists of two or four vertical mounting rails and the supporting framework required to keep the rails in place. The rails and framework are typically made of steel or aluminum to support hundreds or even thousands of kilograms of equipment. The rails have square or round holes that allow clients to mount rack equipment to them with screws. Some equipment includes horizontal rails or shelves that you can mount in the rack to provide additional support.

This is why standard rack equipment will always should be compatible with standard racks. Most IT equipment is nominally 19 inches wide and follow a standard set by the Electronics Industry Alliance (EIA) and maintained by the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA). The vast majority of IT applications use 19-inch racks and equipment. There’s also a standard for 23-inch wide telecom equipment.

A containment system started out as physical barriers that simply separated the hot and cold aisles with vinyl plastic sheeting or Plexiglas covers can be used to separate hot aisles and cold aisles from each other and prevent hot and cold air to mix with each other. Data center technicians consider hot-air and cold-air containment strategies, because of high energy costs and accelerated energy consumption rates.

A cold-aisle containment system method requires that the rows of racks be set up in a consistent hot-aisle / cold-aisle arrangement, encloses the cold aisle, allowing the rest of the data center to become a large hot-air return plenum. By containing the cold aisle, the hot and cold air streams are separated.
A hot-aisle containment system method requires that the rows of racks be set up in a consistent hot-aisle / coldaisle arrangement, and encloses the hot aisle to collect the IT equipment’s hot exhaust air, allowing the rest of the data center to become a large cold-air return plenum. This way the hot aisle, the hot and cold air streams are separated.
Data center space is expensive. Increase in rack population alone could save companies millions of dollars towards new data center expansion. For CoLo sites, this means increased revenue per square foot. Most companies do not populate the top 15% of the rack due to inconsistent supply air temperature. This area at the top of the rack is typically affected by hot exhaust air recirculation. Cold aisle containment systems are designed to eliminate these hot spots, allowing data centers to get more out their space.
